Sahih al-Bukhari 6348 (Book 80, Hadith 45) #6099
The Prophet's Last Words

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was shown his place in Paradise before he passed away and was given the option to stay or go. He chose to go and his last words were "O Allah! Let me join the Highest Companions".

Narrated 'Aisha: When Allah's Messenger was healthy, he used to say, "No prophet dies till he is shown his place in Paradise, and then he is given the option (to live or die)". So when death approached him(during his illness), and while his head was on my thigh, he became unconscious for a while, and when he recovered, he fixed his eyes on the ceiling and said, "O Allah! (Let me join) the Highest Companions (see Qur'an 4:69)," I said, "So, he does not choose us". Then I realized that it was the application of the statement he used to relate to us when he was healthy. So that was his last utterance (before he died), ie "O Allah! (Let me join) the Highest Companions".

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for excellence even in death , Do good deeds throughout life .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's last moments before he passed away. It is narrated by Aisha that when the Prophet was healthy he used to say that no prophet dies until they are shown their place in paradise and then given an option to stay or go. When death approached him while his head was on Aisha's thigh, he became unconscious for a while but when he recovered he fixed his eyes on the ceiling and said "O Allah! Let me join the highest companions". This shows us that even in death we should strive for excellence as this is what our beloved prophet did. We should also remember that death will come eventually so it is important to make sure we are prepared for it by doing good deeds throughout our lives.
