Sending Salat Upon the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SUMMARY: This hadith explains how to send salat (blessings) upon the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: We said, "O Allah's Messenger This is (ie we know) the greeting to you; will you tell us how to send Salat on you?" He said, "Say: 'Allahumma Salli 'ala Muhammadin 'Abdika wa rasulika kama sal-laita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammadin wa all Muhammadin kama barakta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'Ali Ibrahim".
حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، وَالدَّرَاوَرْدِيُّ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ خَبَّابٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، قَالَ قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَذَا السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ، فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي قَالَ ‏ "‏ قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ

This hadith explains how to send salat upon the Prophet Muhammad. The companions of the Prophet asked him how they should send salat on him and he replied with a prayer that includes praising Allah and sending blessings on himself as well as his family. The prayer also includes sending blessings on Ibrahim and his family. This hadith teaches us to always remember to pray for our beloved prophet and ask for Allah’s mercy upon him. It also reminds us of our connection with Ibrahim who is an important figure in Islam. We should always remember to pray for ourselves, our families, and all those who have gone before us in faith.
