Sahih al-Bukhari 913 (Book 11, Hadith 37) #883
Increasing Adhan for Jumua Prayers

SUMMARY: Uthman bin Affan increased the number of Adhans for Jumua prayers from one to three when the population of Medina increased.

Narrated As-Saib bin Yazid: The person who increased the number of Adhans for the Jumua prayers to three was 'Uthman bin 'Affan and it was when the number of the (Muslim) people of Medina had increased. In the lifetime of the Prophet there was only one Mu'adh-dhin and the Adhan used to be pronounced only after the Imam had taken his seat (ie on the pulpit).

QUICK LESSONS:
Remembering religious duties and obligations towards Allah even in times of growth or change .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how 'Uthman bin 'Affan increased the number of adhans for Jumua prayers from one to three when the population of Medina had grown. The adhan is a call to prayer that is made by a mu'adh-dhin, or caller, before each prayer. During Prophet Muhammad's lifetime, there was only one mu'adh-dhin and he would make the call after the Imam had taken his seat on the pulpit. When more people moved into Medina, 'Uthman saw that it was necessary to increase this number so that everyone could hear it and be reminded of their obligation to pray. This hadith teaches us about how important it is for Muslims to remember their obligations and duties towards Allah and His religion even in times of growth or change.
