Greeting Others During Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would say "Allahu Akbar" when bowing and rising from his prayer, and he would greet those to his right and left with "As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah".

It was narrated from Wasi' bin Habban that: He asked 'Abdullah bin 'Umar about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah . He said: "Allahu Akbar" every time he went down and "Allahu Akbar" every time he came up, then he said: "As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah (peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah) to his right and: As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah (peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah) to his left".

QUICK LESSONS:
Say "Allahu Akbar" when bowing down in prayer; Greet those on either side of you with "As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah".

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Wasi' bin Habban tells us about the prayer of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He would begin his prayer by saying “Allahu Akbar” which means “God is great”. This phrase is said to show reverence for God. After bowing down in prayer, he would rise up again saying “Allahu Akbar”. Then, he would greet those on either side of him with a phrase that translates to “Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah”. This shows us that we should always be kind to others even during our prayers as it was something practiced by the Prophet himself. We should also remember that God is great at all times, not just during our prayers but throughout our lives as well.
