Sunan an-Nasai 1326 (Book 13, Hadith 148) #15934
The Etiquette of Saying Salam

SUMMARY: When saying salam, one should turn to their companions and not gesture with their hands.

It was narrated that Jabir bin Samurah said: "I prayed with the Messenger of Allah and when we said the salam we used to gesture with our hands: 'Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah (peace be upon, peace be upon you)'. The Messenger of Allah looked at us and said: 'What is the matter with you, pointing with your hands as if they are the tails of wild horses? When any one of you says the salam, let him turn to his companions and not gesture with his hand'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Turn towards your companions when greeting them
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the etiquette of saying salam. It is narrated by Jabir bin Samurah that when he prayed with the Messenger of Allah, they would say salam and gesture with their hands as if they were the tails of wild horses. The Prophet then looked at them and said that when any one of them says salam, they should turn to their companions instead of gesturing with their hands. This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful in our actions when greeting others and show respect for those around us by turning towards them instead of gesturing in a way that may be seen as disrespectful or inappropriate. We can also learn from this hadith that we should always strive to act in a manner which is pleasing to Allah and His Messenger so as to gain His mercy and blessings.
