Sunan an-Nasai 1350 (Book 13, Hadith 172) #15958
Reducing Tasbih, Tahmid and Takbir Counts

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man from the Ansar being told in a dream to say tasbih, tahmid and takbir 25 times each instead of 33, 34 and 33 respectively.

It was narrated that Zaid bin Thabit said: "They were commanded to say the tasbih thirty-three times following the prayer, and to say the tahmid thirty-three times, and to say the takbir thirty-four times, then a man from among the Ansar was told in a dream: 'Did the Messenger of Allah command you to say the tasbih thirty-three times following the prayer, and to say the tahmid thirty-three times, and to say the takbir thirty-four times?' He said: 'Yes'. 'Instead of that, say each one twenty-five times, and include the tahlil among them'. The next morning he came to the Messenger of Allah and told him about that, and he said: 'Do that'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Be open minded towards new ideas; Be humble enough to accept advice; Say certain phrases after prayer according to Islamic teachings

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about the importance of saying certain phrases after prayer. It was narrated by Zaid bin Thabit that people were commanded to say the phrase “tasbih” thirty-three times following prayer, “tahmid” thirty-three times and “takbir” thirty-four times. However, one man from among the Ansar was told in a dream to reduce these counts to twenty-five for each phrase and also include another phrase called “tahlil” among them. The next morning he came back with this information to Prophet Muhammad who confirmed it as true. This hadith teaches us that we should be open minded towards new ideas even if they come through dreams or visions as long as they are not against Islamic teachings. We should also be humble enough to accept advice even if it comes from unexpected sources such as dreams or visions.
