Sunan an-Nasai 1382 (Book 14, Hadith 19) #15993
Luxurious Clothing and the Afterlife

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) warned against wearing luxurious clothing as it is a sign of arrogance and pride, which will lead to a lack of reward in the afterlife.

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar that : 'Umar bin al-Khattab saw a Hullah and said: "O Messenger of Allah , why don't you buy this and wear it on Fridays and when meeting the delegations when they come to you?" The Messenger of Allah said: "This is worn by one who has no share in the Hereafter". Then something similar was brought to the Messenger of Allah and he gave a Hullah to 'Umar from it'.Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah , have you given me this when you said what you said about the Hullah of Utarid?" The Messenger of Allah said: "I have not given it to you to wear it". So 'Umar gave it to an idolater brother of his in Makkah.

QUICK LESSONS:
Dress modestly without being proud or arrogant .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how one should dress modestly and not be proud or arrogant. It was narrated by Abdullah bin Umar that Umar bin al-Khattab saw a Hullah, which was an expensive garment, and asked why the Prophet Muhammad did not wear it on Fridays or when meeting delegations. The Prophet replied that such clothing is worn by those who have no share in the Hereafter. Later, something similar was brought to the Prophet and he gave it to Umar but told him not to wear it. This teaches us that we should be humble in our dressings as pride can lead us away from Allah's mercy and blessings in this life and hereafter. We should also remember that Allah looks at our hearts rather than our outward appearances so we must strive for piety within ourselves instead of trying to impress others with material possessions or wealth.
