Balancing Worship and Daily Life

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) teaching Abdullah bin 'Amr to balance his worship and daily life activities.

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin 'Amr said: "My father got me married to a woman and he came to visit her and said: 'What do you think of your husband?' She said: 'What a wonderful man he is. He does not sleep at night and he does not break his fast during the day'. He got upset with me and said: 'I got you married to a woman from among the Muslims and you have neglected her'. I did not pay attention to what he said because of my energy and love of worship. News of that reached the Prophet and he said: 'But I stand (in prayer) and I sleep, I fast and I break my fast. So stand (in prayer) and sleep, fast and break your fast'. He said: 'Fast three days of every month'. I said: 'I am able to do more than that'. He said: 'Observe the fast of Dawud, peace be upon him: fast one day and break your fast one day'. I said: 'I am able to do more than that'. He said: 'Read the Quran (once) every month'. Then it ended up being every fifteen days, and I still said: 'I am able to do more than that"'. 'Ata said: "someone who heard him told me that Ibn 'Umar (said) that the Prophet said: 'Whoever fasts every day of his life, then he has not fasted".

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for balance between ibadah & muhasabah; Take care of worldly responsibilities; Read Quran regularly; Follow Allah's commands

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of balancing one's worship with their daily life activities. It was narrated that Abdullah bin 'Amr said that his father got him married to a woman, and when he visited her, she praised him for not sleeping at night or breaking his fast during the day. His father then scolded him for neglecting her due to his energy and love of worship. News of this reached the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who taught Abdullah how to balance between ibadah (worship) and muhasabah (daily life). He advised him to fast three days every month, then it ended up being every fifteen days, but even then Abdullah wanted more. The Prophet then told him to read Quran once a month which was eventually changed into reading it every fifteen days as well. Lastly, he warned against fasting everyday as it would be too much for one person. This hadith teaches us that we should strive for balance in our lives between ibadah and muhasabah so we can live our lives in harmony with Allah's commands while also taking care of our worldly responsibilities such as marriage or work commitments.
