Sunan an-Nasai 2479 (Book 23, Hadith 45) #17090
The Consequences of Not Paying Zakat

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a woman from Yemen who came to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with her daughter wearing two thick gold bangles. The Prophet asked if she paid Zakat on them, and when she said no, he warned her of the consequences of not paying Zakat on the Day of Resurrection. She then gave them to him as charity for Allah and His Messenger.

It was narrated from 'Amr bin Shu 'aib, from his father, from his grandfather, that: a woman from among the people of Yemen came to the Messenger of Allah with a daughter of hers, and on the daughter's hand were two thick bangles of gold. He said: "Do you pay Zakah on these? She said: "No". He said: "Would it please you if Allah were to put two bangles of fire on you on the Day of Resurrection? " So she took them of and gave them to the Messenger of Allah and said: "They are for Allah and His Messenger".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a woman who came to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with her daughter wearing two thick gold bangles. When asked if she paid Zakat on them, she said no. In response to this answer, the Prophet warned her that if she did not pay Zakat on these items then Allah would put two bangles made out of fire around her wrists on the Day of Resurrection. Upon hearing this warning, she took off the gold bangles and gave them as charity for Allah and His Messenger. This hadith teaches us that it is important to pay our due share in charity or else we will be held accountable for it in front of Allah on Judgment day. It also teaches us that we should give generously in charity even if it means giving up something valuable like gold jewelry because ultimately everything belongs to Allah anyway so we should give back what He has given us out of love and gratitude for Him.
