The Consequences of Not Paying Zakah

SUMMARY: Wealth that is not given in charity will be a source of regret on the Day of Judgement.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said: "If Allah gives a person wealth and he does not pay Zakah on it, his wealth will appear to him on the Day of Resurrection as a bald-heated Shuja'a with two dots above its eyes. It will take hold of the corners of his mouth on the Day of Resurrection and will say: 'I am your wealth, I am your hoarded treasure'. The he recited this verse: 'And let not those who covetously withhold of that which Allah has bestowed on them of His Bounty (wealth) and think that it is good for them (and so they do not pay the obligatory Zakah)"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give charity generously according to one's means; Use one's possessions wisely according to Allah's commands; Be responsible for one's possessions; Be kind and compassionate towards others; Do good deeds for others without expecting anything in return; Spend money out of love for Allah rather than out fear or greed.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the importance and consequences of paying zakat, which is a form of charity in Islam. It was narrated by Abu Hurairah that Prophet Muhammad said if Allah gives someone wealth and they do not pay zakat on it, then their wealth will appear to them on the Day of Resurrection as an ugly creature with two dots above its eyes. This creature will take hold of the corners of their mouth and say “I am your wealth, I am your hoarded treasure”. The Prophet then recited a verse from the Quran which states that those who withhold what Allah has bestowed upon them out of greed should not think it is good for them and so they do not pay zakat. This hadith teaches us that we should be generous with our wealth and give to those who are less fortunate than us as this will bring us closer to Allah. We must also remember that whatever we have belongs to Allah so we must use it wisely according to His commands or else face dire consequences in the hereafter.
