Limits of Zakah

SUMMARY: The hadith explains that no Zakah is due on wheat, dates, silver or camels unless the amount or number reaches a certain limit.

It was narrated from Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri that the Messenger of Allah said: "No Zakah is due on wheat or dates unless the amount reaches five Awsuq. No Zakah is due on silver unless the amount reaches five Awaq. No Zakah is due on camels until the number reaches five Dhawd".
أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُمَارَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ لاَ يَحِلُّ فِي الْبُرِّ وَالتَّمْرِ زَكَاةٌ حَتَّى تَبْلُغَ خَمْسَةَ أَوْسُقٍ وَلاَ يَحِلُّ فِي الْوَرِقِ زَكَاةٌ حَتَّى تَبْلُغَ خَمْسَةَ أَوَاقٍ وَلاَ يَحِلُّ فِي إِبِلٍ زَكَاةٌ حَتَّى تَبْلُغَ خَمْسَ ذَوْدٍ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the limits of Zakah which is an obligatory charity in Islam. It states that no zakat is due on wheat, dates, silver or camels unless the amount or number reaches a certain limit. For example, if someone has five Awsuq of wheat then they must pay zakat for it but if they have less than five then no zakat is due. Similarly for dates and silver, five Awaq must be present before any zakat can be paid and for camels five Dhawd must be present before any zakat can be paid. This hadith teaches us to fulfill our obligations towards Allah and to help those who are in need by paying our obligatory charity when we have enough wealth to do so.
