QUICK LESSONS:
Obey orders given by those in authority; Collect taxes fairly; Take responsibility for providing services through taxation

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of taking taxes from irrigation. The Prophet Muhammad sent Mu’adh to Yemen and commanded him to take a tenth of whatever was irrigated by the sky, and half a tenth from what was irrigated with buckets. This hadith teaches us that it is important for people in authority to collect taxes in order for society to function properly. Taxes are necessary for governments to provide services such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, etc., which are essential for citizens’ well-being. It also teaches us that we should be fair when collecting taxes; in this case, the Prophet instructed Mu’adh not only to collect a tenth but also half a tenth depending on how the irrigation was done. This shows us that fairness should be taken into consideration when collecting taxes so as not burden people too much financially or otherwise.
