The Commandment of Sadaqatul Fitr

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) commanded that Sadaqatul Fitr should be given by male and female, free and slave, in the form of a Sa of dates or barley, which was considered equivalent to half a Sa of wheat.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: "The Messenger of Allah enjoined Sadaqatul Fitr upon male and female, free and slave; a Sa of dates or a Sa of barley". He said: "The people considered that equivalent to half a Sa of wheat".
أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ فَرَضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَدَقَةَ الْفِطْرِ عَلَى الذَّكَرِ وَالأُنْثَى وَالْحُرِّ وَالْمَمْلُوكِ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ فَعَدَلَ النَّاسُ إِلَى نِصْفِ صَاعٍ مِنْ بُرٍّ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the commandment of Sadaqatul Fitr given by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It is an obligation upon all Muslims to give charity during Ramadan in the form of a Sa of dates or barley, which was considered equivalent to half a Sa of wheat. This charity is for those who are less fortunate than us and it serves as an act to purify our wealth before Eid-al-Fitr. Giving charity also teaches us humility and gratitude towards Allah for His blessings on us.
