Paying Zakat al-Fitr During Ramadan

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) commanded that everyone, regardless of age, gender or social status, should pay Zakat al-Fitr during Ramadan.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: "The Messenger of Allah enjoined the Zakah of Ramadan on everyone, young and old, free and slave, male and female, a Sa of dates or a Sa of barley".
أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ فَرَضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ زَكَاةَ رَمَضَانَ عَلَى كُلِّ صَغِيرٍ وَكَبِيرٍ حُرٍّ وَعَبْدٍ وَذَكَرٍ وَأُنْثَى صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the obligation of paying Zakat al-Fitr during the month of Ramadan. It was narrated by Ibn 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah commanded that everyone should pay a Sa' of dates or a Sa' of barley as charity to those in need. A Sa' is an ancient unit of measurement which is equivalent to four double handfuls. This hadith teaches us that we must be generous and help those who are less fortunate than us, regardless of their age, gender or social status. We must also remember to fulfill our obligations towards Allah and His creation by giving charity during this blessed month.
