The Obligation of Sadaqatul Fitr

SUMMARY: Sadaqatul Fitr is a Sa' of food.

It was narrated that Abu Raja' said: I heard Ibn 'Abbas deliver a Khutbah from your Minbar - meaning the Minbar in Al-Basrah - saying: 'Sadaqatul Fitr is a Sa' of food". (Sahih) Abu 'Abdur-Rahman (An-Nasa'i) said: This is the most reliable of the three.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give charity during fast breaking period
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the obligation of charity during the fast-breaking period known as Sadaqatul Fitr. It was narrated by Abu Raja’ that he heard Ibn ‘Abbas deliver a Khutbah from the Minbar in Al-Basrah saying that it is obligatory to give a certain amount of food as charity during this time. This was confirmed by Abu ‘Abdur-Rahman An-Nasa’i who said that this narration is most reliable out of three narrations on this topic. The purpose behind giving charity during fast breaking period is to provide for those who are less fortunate and to purify one’s fasting from any indecent acts or speech they may have committed throughout Ramadan.
