Seeking Refuge in Allah

SUMMARY: Seeking refuge in Allah from incapacity, laziness, miserliness, old age and the trials of life and death.

It was narrated from Anas that: The Messenger of Allah SAW used to say: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi, wal-kasali, wal-bukhli, wal-harami, 'adhabil-qabr wa fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, and miserliness and old age, and the torment of the grave, and the trials of life and death)"
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ كَانَ يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَفِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Anas ibn Malik who was a companion to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In this hadith, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ teaches us to seek refuge in Allah from various things such as incapacity, laziness, miserliness, old age etc. He also teaches us to seek protection from the torment of grave which is a reminder for us that we should always be mindful about our actions as we will be held accountable for them on Judgement Day. Additionally he also reminds us to ask for protection against fitnah or trial which can come at any time during our lives. We should always remember that only Allah can protect us against these things so it is important that we turn towards Him with full faith when seeking help or guidance.
