Seeking Refuge in Allah

SUMMARY: Seeking refuge in Allah from incapacity, laziness, miserliness, cowardice, old age and the torment of the grave and trials of life and death.

It was narrated from Anas that: The Prophet of Allah SAW said: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-'ajzi, wal-kasali, wal-bukhli, wal-jubni, wal-harami, wa 'adhabil-qabri, wa fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity, laziness, miserliness, cowardice, old age, the torment of the grave and the trials of life and death)"
أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَفِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Anas ibn Malik who was a companion of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In this hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is teaching us to seek refuge in Allah from incapacity, laziness, miserliness, cowardice, old age and the torment of the grave as well as trials that come with life and death. He is reminding us to always turn to Allah for help when we are faced with difficult situations or times in our lives. We should remember that no matter what happens or how hard things may seem at times; we can always rely on Allah for help. He will never leave us alone if we turn to Him for assistance. This hadith also teaches us about patience; it reminds us that even though life can be difficult at times; if we remain patient then eventually things will get better inshaAllah. It also encourages us to strive towards excellence by avoiding laziness or cowardice which can prevent us from achieving our goals.
