Seeking Refuge from Debt and Kufr

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) equated debt with Kufr and advised people to seek refuge in Allah from both.

Abu Sa'eed said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah SAW say: 'A'udhu billahi minal-kufri wad-dain. (I seek refuge with Allah from Kufr and debt)' A man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, are you equating debt with Kufr?' The Messenger of Allah SAW said: 'Yes'."
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي قَالَ، حَدَّثَنَا حَيْوَةُ، وَذَكَرَ، آخَرَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سَالِمُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ التُّجِيبِيُّ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ دَرَّاجًا أَبَا السَّمْحِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا الْهَيْثَمِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ، يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ ‏"‏ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ وَالدَّيْنِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَتَعْدِلُ الدَّيْنَ بِالْكُفْرِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏"‏ نَعَمْ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Abu Sa'eed, who reported that he heard the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) say, "I seek refuge with Allah from Kufr and debt." When a man asked if the Prophet was equating debt with Kufr, he replied in the affirmative. This hadith teaches us that we should take refuge in Allah from both debt and disbelief. It also shows us how important it is to be mindful of our financial obligations as they can lead to disbelief if not taken seriously. We should strive to pay off our debts on time so as not to incur any negative consequences.
