Taking a Bath for Sexual Defilement According to Prophet Muhammad

SUMMARY: The hadith explains the process of taking a bath for sexual defilement according to the Prophet Muhammad (May peace be upon him).

'Aishah said; When the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) intended to take a bath because of sexual defilement, he would begin with his hands and wash them. Then he would wash the joints of his limbs and pour water upon him when he cleansed both his (hands), he would rub them on the wall (to make them perfectly clean with the dust). Then he would perform ablution and pour water over his head.
حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْبَاهِلِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدٌ، عَنْ أَبِي مَعْشَرٍ، عَنِ النَّخَعِيِّ، عَنِ الأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَغْتَسِلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ بَدَأَ بِكَفَّيْهِ فَغَسَلَهُمَا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ مَرَافِغَهُ وَأَفَاضَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ فَإِذَا أَنْقَاهُمَا أَهْوَى بِهِمَا إِلَى حَائِطٍ ثُمَّ يَسْتَقْبِلُ الْوُضُوءَ وَيُفِيضُ الْمَاءَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the process of taking a bath for sexual defilement according to the Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him. It is narrated by Aishah, one of his wives. The process begins with washing hands and then rubbing them on a wall or surface in order to make them perfectly clean with dust. Then he would perform ablution and pour water over his head. This ritual is known as taharah in Arabic and it is part of Islamic sunnah which are acts that are recommended but not obligatory in Islam. It also includes wudu which is an act of purification done before prayer or any other religious activity.
