Sunan Abi Dawud 2057 (Book 12, Hadith 12) #22348
Respecting Family Ties

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of respecting family ties and how even if someone is not related by blood, they can still be considered family.

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: Aflah ibn AbulQu'ays entered upon me. I hid myself from him. He said: You are hiding yourself from me while I am your paternal uncle. She said: I said: From where? He said: The wife of my brother suckled you. She said: The woman suckled me and not the man. Thereafter the Messenger of Allah entered upon me and I told him this matter. He said: He is your paternal uncle; he may enter upon you.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek advice from wise people before making decisions in life; Respect those who are close to you in your family even if they are not directly related; Show respect towards your elders; Honor your relatives regardless of their relation with you; Treat everyone equally regardless of their relation with you

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of respecting family ties, even if someone is not related by blood. In this hadith, Aisha's paternal uncle came to visit her and she was hesitant because he was not related to her by blood. However, when she told the Prophet Muhammad about it he said that he should be respected as a paternal uncle because his brother's wife had suckled her. This shows us that we should respect those who are close to us in our families even if they are not directly related to us. It also teaches us that we should always seek advice from wise people like the Prophet Muhammad before making decisions in our lives.
