Sunan Abi Dawud 2091 (Book 12, Hadith 46) #22382
Prohibiting Forced Inheritance of Women

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that it is not permissible to prevent a woman from marriage or take away her dower, unless she has committed a major sin.

Ibn 'Abbas explained the Qur’anic verse: It is not lawful for you forcibly to inherit the woman (of your deceased kinsmen) nor (that) ye should put constraint upon them that ye may take away a part of that which ye have given them, unless they be guilty of flagrant lewdness and said "This means that a man used to inherit a relative woman. He prevented her from marriage till she died or returned her dower to her. Hence, Allaah prohibited that practice.

This hadith explains the Quranic verse which states that it is forbidden for a man to inherit a relative woman and prevent her from marriage until she dies or return her dower. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that this practice is wrong and should not be done as it goes against the teachings of Islam. He also taught us that if someone does commit such an act, they must be guilty of major sin in order for them to be punished. This hadith teaches us the importance of respecting women's rights and allowing them to make their own decisions about their lives without any interference from others. It also reminds us that we should never take advantage of someone else's misfortune or use our power over them in order to gain something for ourselves.
