Sahih al-Bukhari 2810 (Book 56, Hadith 26) #2686
Fighting in Allah's Cause

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that the only valid reason to fight is for Allah's Word (Islam) to be superior.

Narrated Abu Musa: A man came to the Prophet and asked, "A man fights for war booty; another fights for fame and a third fights for showing off; which of them fights in Allah's Cause?" The Prophet said, "He who fights that Allah's Word (ie Islam) should be superior, fights in Allah's Cause".

QUICK LESSONS:
Fight in order to spread and protect Islamic teachings

EXPLANATIONS:
A man once asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ what the right reason was for fighting. The Prophet ﷺ replied that it should only be done if it is for Allah’s word to be superior. This means that people should not fight out of greed or pride but instead they should fight in order to spread and protect the teachings of Islam. It is important to remember that even when fighting we must still follow Islamic principles and values such as justice and mercy.
