Fasting During Jihad

SUMMARY: Abu Talha did not fast during the lifetime of the Prophet (ﷺ) due to Jihad, but after his death, he was seen fasting except on 'Id-ul-Fitr and 'Id-ul-Aclha.

Narrated Anas bin Malik: In the life-time of the Prophet, Abu Talha did not fast because of the Jihad, but after the Prophet died I never saw him without fasting except on 'Id-ul-Fitr and 'Id-ul-Aclha.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow religious obligations like fasting even if you are involved in a noble cause like jihad .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about Abu Talha's fasting habits during and after the life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. During the lifetime of the Prophet, Abu Talha did not fast because he was involved in jihad or holy war. However, after the death of the prophet, it was observed that Abu Talha would fast except on two special occasions - Id ul Fitr and Id ul Adhah. This hadith teaches us that even though jihad is a noble cause which requires physical strength and energy from believers, it should not be used as an excuse to neglect religious obligations such as fasting. It also shows us how devoted Abu Talha was to his faith even after losing his beloved leader - The Holy Prophet ﷺ .
