Jami at-Tirmidhi 3155 (Book 47, Hadith 207) #28804
Naming After Prophets and Righteous People

SUMMARY: The hadith is about how the Prophet Muhammad sent a man to Najran and he was asked a question which he did not know how to answer. When he returned, the Prophet Muhammad told him why they were named after their Prophets and righteous people before them.

Narrated Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah: "The Messenger of Allah sent me to Najran. They said to me: 'Do you people not recite: O sister of Harun (19:28) - while between Musa and 'Eisa there is such (gap) as there is?' I did not know how to respond to them. So when I returned to the Prophet , I told him about that, and he said: 'Why didn't you tell them that they were named after their Prophets and righteous people before them'."
