Sunan Ibn Majah 1837 (Book 8, Hadith 55) #31189
The Promise of Paradise for Not Asking People for Anything

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) promised paradise to those who commit themselves to not asking people for anything.

Abdur-Rahman bin Yazid narrated that: Thawban said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Who will commit himself to one thing, I will guarantee him paradise?' I said: 'I will'. He said: 'Do not ask people for anything'. So Thawban would drop his whip while he was on his mount, and he would not say to anyone: 'Get that for me' rather he would dismount and grab it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Commit yourself to one thing; Be independent; Do not ask people for favors all the time; Be humble in your dealings with others

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the promise of paradise that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) made to those who commit themselves to not asking people for anything. Thawban was one such person who accepted this challenge and committed himself to it. He would drop his whip while he was on his mount but instead of asking someone else to pick it up, he would dismount and grab it himself. This hadith teaches us that we should be independent and not rely on others too much as Allah rewards those who are self-sufficient with paradise. It also teaches us that we should be humble in our dealings with others and not ask them for favors all the time as this can lead us away from Allah's mercy.
