Sunan Ibn Majah 1838 (Book 8, Hadith 56) #31190
The Sin of Greed

SUMMARY: Begging for the purpose of accumulating wealth is a sin and will lead to punishment in the afterlife.

Abu Hurairah narrated that: the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever begs from people so as to accumulate more riches, he is asking for alive coal from hell, so let him ask for a lot or a little".

QUICK LESSONS:
Ask only for what you need or a little more than necessary; Give charity; Have contentment with what Allah has given you; Avoid greediness; Follow Islamic teachings on begging/accumulating wealth

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith warns us against greed and its consequences. It teaches us that if we beg from people with the intention of accumulating wealth, then we are asking for live coal from hell. This means that our actions will be punished in the afterlife. We should not be greedy and instead ask only for what we need or a little more than what is necessary. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was teaching us to be content with what Allah has given us and not to seek more than our needs as it can lead to punishment in the hereafter. We should also remember that whatever Allah has given us is enough for our needs and it is better to give charity than accumulate wealth through begging or other means which are considered sinful by Islam.
