Sunan Ibn Majah 1874 (Book 9, Hadith 30) #31226
Women's Right To Choose Marriage

SUMMARY: The Prophet gave a woman the choice to accept or reject her father's decision to marry her off to his brother's son in order to raise his status.

It was narrated from Ibn Buraidah that: his father said: "A girl came to the Prophet and said: 'My father married me to his brother's son so that he might raise his status thereby'. The Prophet gave her the choice, and she said: 'I approve of what my father did, but I wanted women to know that their fathers have no right to do that'. "

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect your parents, Stand up for yourself if your rights are being violated

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a woman who was married off by her father against her will. She went to the Prophet and he gave her the choice of whether or not she wanted to accept this marriage. She chose not to accept it and instead wanted other women to know that their fathers have no right over them when it comes to marriage decisions. This hadith teaches us that women have the right and freedom of choice when it comes to marriage decisions and should not be forced into anything they do not want. It also teaches us that we should respect our parents but also stand up for ourselves if we feel like our rights are being violated.
