Sunan Ibn Majah 2027 (Book 10, Hadith 12) #31379
Adorning After Postnatal Bleeding

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ declared that if a woman adorns herself after her postnatal bleeding ends, then her waiting period is over.

It was narrated that Abu Sanabil said: "Subai'ah Aslamiyyah bint Harith gave birth twenty-odd days after her husband died. When her postnatal bleeding ended, she adorned herself, and was criticized for doing that. Her case was mentioned to the Prophet and he said: 'If she does that, then her waiting period is over"'.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the waiting period of a widow. According to Islamic law, when a woman's husband dies, she must observe a waiting period of four months and ten days before she can remarry. In this hadith, Subai'ah Aslamiyyah bint Harith gave birth twenty-odd days after her husband died and when her postnatal bleeding ended, she adorned herself which was criticized by people around her. Her case was mentioned to the Prophet who declared that if she does that then her waiting period is over. This hadith teaches us that even in difficult times like death of one's spouse or childbirth, one should not forget their religious obligations and should take care of themselves as well as their spiritual needs. It also teaches us to be considerate towards others in difficult times and not criticize them for taking care of themselves or fulfilling their religious obligations.
