Sunan Ibn Majah 2042 (Book 10, Hadith 27) #31394
Exemption from Accountability

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that a minor, an insane person and a sleeper are not held accountable for their actions.

It was narrated from 'Ali bin Abu Talib that: the Messenger of Allah said: "The Pen is lifted from the minor, the insane person and the sleeper".

QUICK LESSONS:
Treat minors, insane people and sleepers with kindness and compassion as Allah has commanded us to do so in the Quran.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that minors, insane people and sleepers are exempt from accountability for their actions. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that the pen is lifted from them, meaning they will not be held responsible for what they do or say. This is because these individuals lack the capacity to understand right from wrong or make decisions in the same way as adults do. Therefore, it is important to treat them with kindness and compassion as Allah has commanded us to do so in the Quran. We should also remember that we will all be judged by Allah on the Day of Judgment according to our intentions and deeds, so we should strive to live our lives in accordance with His commands.
