Making Expiation for Oaths

SUMMARY: If someone makes an oath and then finds something better, they should do the better thing and make expiation for their oath.

It was narrated from 'Adi bin Hatim that : the Messenger of Allah , said: "Whoever swears an oath then sees that something else is better than it, let him do that which is better and offer expiation for what he swore about".

QUICK LESSONS:
Make careful decisions before making any commitments or promises; Choose what's best even after making a commitment; Offer some kind of compensation or apology when changing one's mind after making a commitment; Be honest with one's promises.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about making expiation for an oath. An oath is when someone promises to do something or not do something. In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that if someone makes an oath but then finds out that there is a better option than what they promised, they should choose the better option and offer expiation for their original promise. This means that if you make a promise but later find out that it was not the best choice, you can still change your mind and choose the better option without breaking your promise. You just need to offer some kind of compensation or apology in order to make up for it. This teaches us to be honest with our promises and also shows us how important it is to think carefully before making any decisions or commitments so we don't have to worry about having to apologize later on!
