Sunan Ibn Majah 2336 (Book 13, Hadith 29) #31688
Neighborly Kindness and Fulfilling Oaths

SUMMARY: This hadith is about two brothers from the sons of Mughirah, where one of them swore an oath to set a slave free if the other one fixed a piece of wood to his wall. The Ansar then reminded him that the Prophet (PBUH) said not to refuse a neighbor's request for fixing something on their wall.

'Ikrimah bin Salamh narrated that : there were two brothers from among the sons of Mughirah. One of them swore an oath to set a slave free if the other one fixed a piece of wood to his wall. Mujammi' bin Yazid and many men from among the Ansar came and said: "We bear witness that the Messenger of Allah said: 'None of you should refuse to let his neighbor fix a piece of wood to his wall'. " He said: 'O my brother, judgment has been passed in your favor against me, but I have sworn an oath'. So go ahead and fix your wood to my wall".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be kind towards your neighbors; Fulfill your promises; Respect others; Be generous; Bear witness when needed; Do not refuse requests from neighbors

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how we should treat our neighbors with kindness and respect. It also teaches us that we should fulfill our oaths even if it means going against our own interests. In this case, the brother was willing to let his neighbor fix a piece of wood on his wall even though he had sworn an oath that would have cost him dearly otherwise. This shows us how important it is for us to keep our promises and be kind towards others no matter what situation we are in. We can learn from this hadith that being generous and kind towards others will always bring blessings in return, as well as help us stay true to ourselves by fulfilling our promises no matter what they may be.
