Sunan Ibn Majah 3360 (Book 29, Hadith 110) #32714
Modesty and Humility in Decoration

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) refused to enter a house that was too well-decorated, as it is not in line with his teachings of modesty and humility.

Safinah, Abu 'Abdur-Rahman, narrated that a man visited 'Ali bin Abu Talib and he made some food for him.* Fatimah said: "Why don’t we invite the Prophet to eat with us?" So they invited him and he came. He put his hand on the doorpost of the house and saw a thin curtain in the corner of the house, so he went back. Fatimah said to 'Ali: "Go and catch up with him, and ask him: 'What made you go back, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "I do not enter a well-decorated house".
