Speaking Good Words in Sickness and Death

SUMMARY: When visiting a sick or dying person, one should speak good words as the angels will say 'Amin' to them.

Umm Salamah (May Allah be pleased with her): The Messenger of Allah said, "When you visit a sick or a dying person, you should utter good words because the angels say 'Amin' at what you say'.' She added: When Abu Salamah (May Allah be pleased with him) died, I came to the Prophet and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Salamah has died". He directed me to supplicate thus: "Allahummaghfir li wa lahu, wa a'qibni minhu 'uqba hasanatan O Allah, forgive me and him, and bestow upon me a better future (give me a better substitute)". So I supplicated as he directed, and Allah gave me a man who was better for me than Abu Salamah (ie, the Prophet Muhammad ). (The Prophet married Umm Salamah afterwards) Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Speak kind & encouraging words
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about speaking good words when visiting a sick or dying person. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that when we visit someone who is ill or near death, we should speak kind and encouraging words as the angels will say ‘Amin’ to our words. Umm Salamah was an example of this teaching when she visited Abu Salamah who was ill and then died. She reported her experience to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who directed her to make supplications for Abu Salamah's forgiveness and for Allah to give her a better future than what she had with Abu Salamah. Allah answered her prayer by giving her a better substitute in the form of marriage with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself. This hadith teaches us that even in difficult times such as sickness or death we should remain positive by speaking kind words which can be heard by Allah through his angels saying ‘Amin’. We should also make supplications for those affected by illness or death so that they may receive mercy from Allah and be granted peace in their afterlife.
