This hadith speaks to the importance of retaining knowledge, specifically that of the Qur'an. It compares one who knows the Qur'an by heart to an owner of a hobbled camel. If he remains vigilant and takes care of it, he will retain it; however if he neglects it, then it will go away. This teaches us that we must remain diligent in our efforts to learn and retain knowledge or else we risk losing what we have learned. We must also take care in how we use this knowledge as well as how much time and effort we put into learning new things so that our efforts are not wasted. Additionally, this hadith emphasizes the importance of taking responsibility for our own learning process rather than relying on others to teach us or provide us with information.
