Riyad as-Salihin 1388 (Book 12, Hadith 13) #37877
The Path of Knowledge

SUMMARY: Seeking knowledge is a path to Jannah and the learned are superior to the devout worshipper. The Prophets bequeath knowledge, not money, and those who acquire it have acquired an abundant portion.

Abud-Darda (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah said, "He who follows a path in quest of knowledge, Allah will make the path of Jannah easy to him. The angels lower their wings over the seeker of knowledge, being pleased with what he does. The inhabitants of the heavens and the earth and even the fish in the depth of the oceans seek forgiveness for him. The superiority of the learned man over the devout worshipper is like that of the full moon to the rest of the stars (ie, in brightness). The learned are the heirs of the Prophets who bequeath neither dinar nor dirham but only that of knowledge; and he who acquires it, has in fact acquired an abundant portion". Abu Dawud and At- Tirmidhi.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of seeking knowledge in order to reach Jannah. It also highlights that those who seek knowledge are superior to those who only worship devoutly, as they will receive more blessings from Allah and even from the inhabitants of heaven and earth. Furthermore, it states that prophets do not leave behind money but rather they leave behind their wisdom which is much more valuable than any material wealth one can possess. Finally, this hadith encourages us all to pursue knowledge as it will lead us on a path towards success in this life and in the hereafter.
