Riyad as-Salihin 1475 (Book 16, Hadith 11) #37964
Seeking Forgiveness and Mercy from Allah

SUMMARY: This hadith teaches us to ask Allah for forgiveness and mercy, as He is the Most Forgiving and Compassionate.

Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I requested the Messenger of Allah to teach me a supplication which I could recite in my Salat (prayer). Thereupon he said, "Recite: 'Allahumma inni zalamtu nafsi zulman kathiran, wa la yaghfirudh- dhunuba illa Anta, faghfir li maghfiratan min 'indika, warhamni, innaka Antal-Ghafur-ur-Rahim (O Allah! I have considerably wronged myself. There is none to forgive the sins but You. So grant me pardon and have mercy on me. You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Compassionate)"'. Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, tells us of a supplication that we can recite in our salat. The supplication is “Allahumma inni zalamtu nafsi zulman kathiran, wa la yaghfirudh- dhunuba illa Anta, faghfir li maghfiratan min 'indika, warhamni, innaka Antal-Ghafur-ur-Rahim” which translates to “O Allah! I have considerably wronged myself. There is none to forgive the sins but You. So grant me pardon and have mercy on me. You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Compassionate”. This hadith teaches us that we should always seek forgiveness from Allah for our wrongdoings as He is the only one who can truly forgive us and show mercy upon us due to His immense compassion and forgiveness towards mankind. We should also remember that no matter how much we sin or how bad our deeds may be; if we sincerely repent then there will always be a chance for redemption in His eyes as He is ever forgiving and merciful towards those who turn back to Him in repentance.
