Riyad as-Salihin 1550 (Book 17, Hadith 40) #38039
Grave Sins & False Testimonies

SUMMARY: The gravest of the cardinal sins is to join others as partners with Allah in worship and to be undutiful to one's parents. It is also warned against making a false statement and giving a false testimony.

Abu Bakrah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah said, "Shall I not inform you of one of the gravest of the cardinal sins?" We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" He said, "To join others as partners with Allah in worship and to be undutiful to one's parents". The Messenger of Allah sat up from his reclining position (in order to stress the importance of what he was going to say) and added, "I warn you making a false statement and giving a false testimony. I warn you against making a false statement and giving a false testimony". The Messenger of Allah kept on repeating this (warning) till we wished he should stop. Al- Bukhari and Muslim

QUICK LESSONS:
Worship only God Alone ; Respect your Parents ; Be truthful ; Give true testimonies

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by Abu Bakrah, informs us of the two gravest cardinal sins according to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The first sin is joining others as partners with Allah in worship, which means worshipping anyone or anything other than Allah alone. This includes praying to idols or saints, believing that they have any power over our lives or destiny, and attributing any form of divinity or power to them. The second sin mentioned in this hadith is being undutiful towards one’s parents; this includes disobeying them without valid reason and not showing them respect and kindness even if they are wrong. In addition, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warns us against making false statements and giving false testimonies; these are serious crimes that can lead people astray from the truth and cause harm to innocent people’s reputations. We should always strive for truthfulness in our words so that we can maintain trustworthiness among ourselves as well as earn God’s pleasure through our actions.
