Avoiding Spying and Finding Faults in Other Muslims

SUMMARY: We should not spy on or find faults with other Muslims unless their sin is overt.

It has been reported that a man was brought before Abdullah bin Mas'ud (May Allah be pleased with him) because his beard was giving out smell of wine. Ibn Mas'ud said: "We have been prohibited from spying (on Muslims) and finding faults (with them). But we can take to task only and only if the sin is overt. Abu Dawud.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that we should not spy on or find faults with other Muslims unless their sin is overt. It is important to remember that Allah has prohibited us from spying and finding fault with others, as it can lead to a lot of harm and hurt feelings. We should only take action if the sin is obvious, so that we can help our fellow Muslim brothers and sisters stay away from wrongdoings. This hadith also teaches us the importance of being kind to one another, even when someone has done something wrong. Instead of judging them harshly, we should try to help them understand why what they did was wrong and how they can avoid doing it again in the future.
