The Prophet's Concern for His Wife's Reputation

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) was concerned that two Ansari men would have evil thoughts about his wife Safiyyah bint Huyai (May Allah be pleased with her), so he identified her to them.

Safiyyah bint Huyai (May Allah be pleased with her), the Mother of the Believers, said: I came to visit the Prophet while he was in the state of I'tikaf (seclusion) in the mosque during the last ten days of Ramadan. After having talked to him, I got up to return. The Prophet also got up with me and accompanied me a part of the way. At that moment two Ansari man passed by. When they saw him they quickened their pace. The Prophet said to them, "Do not hurry. She is Safiyyah, daughter of Huyai, my wife". They said: "Subhan Allah (Allah is free from imperfection)! O Messenger of Allah! (You are far away from any suspicion)". The Messenger of Allah said, "Satan circulates in a person like blood (in the blood streams). I apprehended lest Satan should drop some evil thoughts in your minds". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of protecting one’s reputation and guarding against evil thoughts. It is narrated by Safiyyah bint Huyai who was the wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. She visited him while he was in I'tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan and when she left two Ansari men passed by. The Prophet ﷺ noticed that they quickened their pace and so he identified her to them as his wife in order to protect her from any suspicion or ill thoughts they may have had about her. He also warned them that Satan circulates in a person like blood does in veins and can cause people to think bad things about others without any basis or proof. This hadith teaches us how important it is to protect our own reputation as well as those around us from slander or false accusations which can be caused by Satan’s influence on our minds. We should always strive to think positively of others even if we don’t know much about them because this is what Allah expects from us as believers.
