The Consequences of Taking False Oaths

SUMMARY: Taking a false oath, even for an insignificant thing, will lead to Allah decreeing the Hell Fire and debarring Jannah.

Abu Umamah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah said, "Allah decrees the (Hell) Fire and debars Jannah for the one who usurps the rights of a believer by taking a false oath". One man asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Even if it should be for an insignificant thing?" He said, "Even if it be a stick of the Arak tree (ie, the tree from which Miswak sticks are taken)". Muslim.

Keep your promises and avoid falsehoods at all costs.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the consequences of taking a false oath. It is narrated by Abu Umamah that the Messenger of Allah said that if someone takes a false oath, then Allah will decree the Hell Fire and debar them from entering Jannah. When asked if this was true even for an insignificant thing, such as a stick from an Arak tree, he replied in affirmation. This hadith teaches us that we should be very careful when making any kind of promise or oath because it can have serious consequences if broken or taken falsely. We should always strive to keep our promises and not take any kind of false oaths as it can lead to severe punishment from Allah.
