Punishment for Slave-Girl's Fornication

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the punishment for a slave-girl who commits fornication and how she should not be rebuked.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet said, "When a slave-girl commits fornication and this fact of fornication has become evident, she must be given the penalty of (fifty) lashes without hurling reproaches at her; if she does it again, she must be given the penalty but she should not be rebuked. If she does it for the third time, he should sell her, even for a rope woven from hair (ie, something worthless)". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the punishment that is to be given to a slave girl if she commits fornication. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that if it is proven that she has committed this sin then she must receive fifty lashes as a penalty without being reproached or scolded. If it happens again then the same penalty should be given but without any rebuke. However, if it happens a third time then the slave girl should be sold even if it is only worth something like a rope woven from hair. This hadith teaches us about justice and mercy as well as how we should treat people with respect regardless of their social status or position in society. It also shows us that we must take responsibility for our actions and face the consequences of our wrongdoings in order to learn from them and become better people in life.
