Poverty and Gender in Jannah and Jahannam

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) saw that the majority of those who enter Jannah are the poor, and the wealthy were kept out. He also saw that the majority of those in Hell are women.

Usamah bin Zaid (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet said, "I stood at the gate of Jannah, and (I saw) that the majority of those who entered it are the poor, and the wealthy were kept confined. The inmates of the Fire had been ordered to (enter) the Fire (Hell), and I stood at the gate of Hell and saw that the majority of its inmates are women". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to us about poverty and gender in relation to entering Paradise or Hell. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said he stood at the gates of Paradise and noticed that most of those who entered were poor people, while wealthy people were kept out. He then stood at the gates of Hell and noticed that most of its inmates were women. This hadith teaches us a few important values; firstly, it shows us how Allah rewards good deeds regardless of wealth or social status; secondly, it reminds us to be generous with our wealth as this is one way we can gain entry into Paradise; thirdly, it warns us against being too proud or arrogant because this can lead to exclusion from Paradise; fourthly, it encourages us to be mindful about our actions as they will determine whether we end up in Heaven or Hell; fifthly, it serves as a reminder for men not to oppress women because they may end up paying for their sins in Hell if they do so.
