Kindness and Respect for Women

SUMMARY: Treat women kindly, do not be cruel to them, and respect their rights.

'Amr bin Al-Ahwas Al-Jushami (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that he had heard the Prophet saying on his Farewell Pilgrimage, after praising and glorifying Allah and admonishing people, "Treat women kindly, they are like captives in your hands; you do not owe anything else from them. In case they are guilty of open indecency, then do not share their beds and beat them lightly but if they return to obedience, do not have recourse to anything else against them. You have rights over your wives and they have their rights over you. Your right is that they shall not permit anyone you dislike to enter your home, and their right is that you should treat them well in the matter of food and clothing". At- Tirmidhi, who categorized it as Hadith Hasan Sahih.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was on his Farewell Pilgrimage when he said this hadith, emphasizing the need to treat women kindly as if they were captives in one's hands. He also mentioned that if a woman commits an act of open indecency, then one should not share their bed and beat them lightly but if they return to obedience then no other action should be taken against them. The Prophet ﷺ also stated that both men and women have rights over each other; men have the right that no one they dislike enters their home while women have the right to be treated well in terms of food and clothing. This hadith emphasizes how important it is for us to treat our wives with kindness, respect their rights, and never take any extreme measures against them even if they commit an act of open indecency.
