Maintaining Relationships Despite Unreciprocated Kindness

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of maintaining relationships with family members, even if they are not reciprocating.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man said to Messenger of Allah : "I have relatives with whom I try to keep the ties of relationship but they sever relations with me; and whom I treat kindly but they treat me badly, I am gentle with them but they are rough to me". He replied, "If you are as you say, it is as if you are feeding them hot ashes, and you will be with a supporter against them from Allah as long as you continue to do so". Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of maintaining relationships with family members, even if they are not reciprocating. It encourages us to continue being kind and gentle towards them despite their unkind behavior towards us. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ compares this act of kindness to feeding someone hot ashes, which is a metaphor for how difficult it can be to remain kind in such situations. He also promises that Allah will be a supporter against those who sever ties with us as long as we continue our good deeds. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive for peace and harmony in our relationships, no matter how difficult it may seem at times.
