The Gate of Jannah

SUMMARY: A man came to Abud-Darda' asking for advice on whether or not he should divorce his wife due to his mother's command. Abud-Darda' advised him that it is best to keep the gate of Jannah open by following the commands of one's parents.

Abud-Darda' (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man came to me and said, "I have a wife whom my mother commands me to divorce". I replied him that I had heard Messenger of Allah saying, "A parent is the best of the gates of Jannah; so if you wish, keep to the gate, or lose it". At-Tirmidhi, who classified it as Hadith Hasan Sahih.

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey your parents and strive for their pleasure in order for you gain access into paradise in the hereafter.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of parental obedience and how it can lead us closer to paradise, or jannah. It is narrated by Abud-Darda', who was a companion of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, that a man came to him seeking advice on whether or not he should divorce his wife due to his mother's command. In response, Abud-Darda' advised him that it is best to keep the gate of jannah open by following the commands of one's parents as they are considered "the best gates" according to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This hadith teaches us that we must always obey our parents and strive for their pleasure in order for us to gain access into paradise in the hereafter. We must also remember that our actions have consequences and if we choose not follow our parent’s wishes then we may be losing out on an opportunity for eternal bliss in jannah.
