The Power of Good Deeds

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that performing good deeds can help to erase small sins.

'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man kissed a woman and he came to the Prophet and made a mention of that to him. It was (on this occasion) that this Ayah was revealed: "And perform As-Salat (Iqamat-As-Salat), at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night ie, the five compulsory Salat (prayers). Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds (ie, small sins)". (11:114) That person said, "O Messenger of Allah , does it concern me only?". He (Messenger of Allah ) said, "It concerns the whole of my Ummah". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the power of good deeds and how they can help us to erase our small sins. It was narrated by Abdullah bin Mas'ud, who reported that a man came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and told him he had kissed a woman. In response, Allah revealed an ayah in the Quran which said that if we perform salat at the two ends of the day and some hours of night, our good deeds will remove our evil deeds. When asked if this only applied to him, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ replied that it applies to all his Ummah. This teaches us that even though we may make mistakes or do something wrong, we should not give up hope as long as we continue doing good deeds such as praying regularly and being kind towards others. These actions will help us erase any wrongdoings from our record and bring us closer to Allah's mercy.
