Respectful Disposal of Spittle in Prayer

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the importance of keeping the mosque clean and respectful, and how to properly dispose of spittle while in prayer.

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet noticed spittle in the mosque in the direction of the Qiblah. The signs of disgust were perceived on his face. Then, he stood up and scraped it away with his own hand and said, "When you stand in Salat, you hold communion with your Rabb and He is between you and the Qiblah. Let no one therefore cast out his spittle in that direction, but only to his left or under his foot". Then he caught hold a corner of his sheet, spat into it and folded it up and said, "Or he should do like this". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect places where you pray; be mindful during prayer; dispose bodily fluids properly

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about respecting the mosque and disposing of spittle properly while praying. The Prophet Muhammad noticed spittle on the ground in the direction of the Qiblah, which is a symbol for God's presence. He was disgusted by this sight and scraped it away with his own hand. He then taught that when one stands to pray, they should hold communion with their Lord who is between them and the Qiblah, so no one should spit out their spittle in that direction but instead either to their left or under their foot. Alternatively, he suggested catching a corner of one's sheet, spitting into it and folding it up. This hadith teaches us to be mindful when we are praying as well as respect for our places of worship by keeping them clean from any form of dirt or filthiness.
