The Prophet's Decision on Lian

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) separated a couple and decided that the child belonged to the mother only, after they had carried out Lian.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: The Prophet made a man and his wife carry out Lian, and the husband repudiated her child. So the Prophet got them separated (by divorce) and decided that the child belonged to the mother only.
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي نَافِعٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ لاَعَنَ بَيْنَ رَجُلٍ وَامْرَأَتِهِ، فَانْتَفَى مِنْ وَلَدِهَا فَفَرَّقَ بَيْنَهُمَا، وَأَلْحَقَ الْوَلَدَ بِالْمَرْأَةِ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith narrates an incident in which a man and his wife were accused of adultery, known as lian. In response to this accusation, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ separated them by divorce and decided that the child belonged to the mother only. This hadith teaches us that it is important for us to be just in our dealings with others, even if it means going against societal norms or expectations. We should always strive for justice and fairness when dealing with any situation or dispute between two parties. Furthermore, this hadith also highlights how important it is for us to protect children’s rights in any situation; no matter what happens between parents or guardians, children should always be taken care of first and foremost.
