Mourning Periods in Islam

SUMMARY: A Muslim woman should not mourn for more than three days, except for her husband, for whom she should mourn for four months and ten days.

Narrated Um Habiba: The Prophet said, "It is not lawful for a Muslim woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for more than three days, except for her husband, for whom she should mourn for four months and ten days".
وَسَمِعْتُ زَيْنَبَ ابْنَةَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، تُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ قَالَ ‏ "‏ لاَ يَحِلُّ لاِمْرَأَةٍ مُسْلِمَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ أَنْ تُحِدَّ فَوْقَ ثَلاَثَةِ أَيَّامٍ، إِلاَّ عَلَى زَوْجِهَا أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the mourning period of a Muslim woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day. According to this hadith, a Muslim woman is not allowed to mourn more than three days, except if it is her husband that passed away. In that case, she must mourn him for four months and ten days. This teaches us that we must respect the laws of our religion and follow them even when we are grieving or sad about something. It also teaches us to be patient during difficult times as well as show respect towards our loved ones even after they have passed away.
