Sahih al-Bukhari 5350 (Book 68, Hadith 95) #5124
The Prophet's Advice on Lian

SUMMARY: This hadith is about a case of Lian (false accusation of adultery) and the Prophet's (ﷺ) advice to the husband and wife involved. He advises them that their accounts are with Allah, one of them is a liar, and the husband has no right to take back any money he paid as Mahr.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: The Prophet said to those who were involved in a case of Lian, "Your accounts are with Allah. One of you two is a liar. You (husband) have right on her (wife)". The husband said, "My money, O Allah's Apostle!" The Prophet said, "You are not entitled to take back any money. If you have told the truth, the Mahr that you paid, was for having sexual relations with her lawfully; and if you are a liar, then you are less entitled to get it back".

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for justice even if it means admitting your own wrongdoings or mistakes; always strive for righteousness in all aspects of life; tell the truth in relationships

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gives advice to those involved in a case of Li'an. Li'an is when one spouse falsely accuses the other spouse of adultery. The Prophet ﷺ tells them that their accounts are with Allah; meaning they will be judged by Him for their actions. He also states that one of them must be lying and therefore not entitled to take back any money they paid as Mahr - which is a payment given by the groom to his bride at marriage. This hadith teaches us about truthfulness in our relationships and how we should strive for justice even if it means admitting our own wrongdoings or mistakes. It also reminds us that ultimately all our actions will be judged by Allah so we should always strive for righteousness in all aspects of life.
